Flying the American Flag
The American flag should be flown with pride every day as a tribute to our nation and the values it represents.
Flying the United States flag at half-staff symbolizes a period of mourning for the nation. These moments of remembrance are typically proclaimed by the President for national observances or by a state governor for local events. This honor is often observed to mourn the loss of a current or former member of the federal, state, or territorial government or judiciary. Additionally, the heads of federal departments and agencies may direct the flag to be flown at half-staff on buildings, grounds, or naval vessels within their jurisdiction.
The United States flag is flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Patriot Day (September 11), Korean War Veterans Armistice Day (July 27), National Firefighters Memorial Day, and Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day (December 7).
